A Call from Mayur Vihar Phase 1

On 9th October 2021, GauNandiSewa received an urgent request from Mayur Vihar Phase 1, New Delhi. An old bull — one the neighborhood had come to know and revere as "Mahadev Nandi baba" — was gravely ill, and those who cared for him knew he could not survive without help. We knew from the first call that this would be a race against time.

Found in a Critical, Devastating State

What our team found when they reached him was heartbreaking. Deadly lumpy skin disease had taken hold of his aging body, and the open lesions it left behind had become infested with maggots — not in one place, but all over him, including inside his nose and his eyes. An old bull, already carrying the weight of age, was now carrying wounds that most animals would not survive. He was in critical condition.

Rescued by Dr. Naresh Sharma ji's Kamdhenu Ambulance

He was rescued in critical condition by Dr. Naresh Sharma ji and the Kamdhenu Ambulance team, who stabilized him on the spot before bringing him home to GauNandiSewa for treatment and dedicated care. Every wound had to be cleaned, every maggot removed by hand, and every inch of him tended to with the patience his condition demanded.

A Bull Who Would Not Be Forsaken

The Rigveda speaks of the cow — and by extension the bull who stands beside her — as sacred and inviolate, never to be forsaken:

मा नो हिꣳसीरघ्न्यां

mā no hiṁsīr aghnyām

"...kill not her, the sinless, inviolate cow." (Rigveda 7.101.15) An old bull carrying the name of Mahadev's own Nandi could not be left to die on a Delhi street. Every treatment we gave him was a refusal to let that ancient promise be broken.

Healed, Healthy, and Happy

Today, Mahadev Nandi baba is healed, healthy, and happy. The wounds that once covered his body are gone, the disease that nearly took his life has been defeated, and the old guardian carries his name with dignity once again — just as Nandi stands eternally beside Mahadev, steady and unshaken.

A Recovery Made Possible Together

अयं बन्धुरयं नेति गणना लघुचेतसाम् । उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम् ॥

ayaṁ bandhur-ayaṁ neti gaṇanā laghu-chetasām, udāra-charitānāṁ tu vasudhaiva kuṭumbakam

"'This one is a relative, this one a stranger' — such is the calculation of the small-minded. To those of noble character, the whole world is but one family." (Maha Upanishad) A recovery this complete, from a condition this critical, was only possible because of everyone who stands with GauNandiSewa. Mahadev Nandi baba's second life is a life we all gave him, together.
